The City of North Las Vegas is celebrating Black History Month with a video poetry contest centered on the theme, "What does Black History mean to you?" Video poetry submissions will be accepted through Monday, Feb. 7 and winners will be announced Thursday, Feb. 10.
"It is my goal to not only celebrate the history and contributions made by my fellow African Americans, but also recognize our wonderful employees in the roles they play to bring inclusion and equality in our community," said North Las Vegas Councilwoman Pamela Goynes-Brown. "I am thrilled to be a part of this citywide celebration aimed at highlighting the achievements of African Americans who have been largely marginalized in our society."
North Las Vegas residents are invited to submit their poem via a video that is no longer than 90 seconds to BlackHistoryCNLV@cityofnorthlasvegas.com. First place winner will receive a $50 gift card, second place winner will receive a $25 gift card and the third place winner will receive a $15 gift card. Additionally, the first place winner's video will be streamed during the Feb. 16 City Council meeting.
In honor of Black History Month, Black-owned businesses Reasons Banquet and Events Hall and Studio 305 will also be recognized at the Feb. 2 City Council meeting as outstanding organizations of the month.
Lastly, the City will run a social media campaign all through February that will highlight outstanding African-American employees. Employees will be invited to participate in a prayer and singing of the Black National Anthem on the steps of Liberty Park at City Hall at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24 in celebration of the culmination of Black History Month. A photo will be taken to commemorate the gathering as employees of African ancestry will be invited to dress in traditional African attire.
